Eco Pier | Miami
Much like some living organisms directly rely on each other to survive, this Eco-Pier attempts to harmoniously reside within the Miami River and its surroundings. Anchored in the city’s heart, the Eco-Pier invites residents and visitors to relax, learn, and play. Pedestrians can walk to the pier on the Northside or arrive on boats towards the South.
The Eco-Pier’s design is a testament to its functionality and innovation. Its dynamic shapes and architectonics offer a unique experience from every perspective. The intervention comprises a series of interconnected concrete structures unified by a complex netting system.
This system, adaptable in height and tension, activates various areas of the park, providing spaces for relaxation, exploration, and even swimming during high water levels.
The concrete forms cut through the existing site, creating new water channels underneath the netting system. Moreover, embedded and sometimes towering over the concrete floors are a series of gabion cages containing the same type of soil found in South Florida. These cages reach the Miami River’s water from underneath, providing water to the Mangroves planted within. Mangroves benefit from water filtering, air quality improvement, shade, and sea life conservation and restoration.
