Short Film | Respect The Ocean
"El Mar Se Respeta" is a deeply personal exploration of the intricate relationship between nature, family, and personal growth. The film delves into the protagonist's connection with the ocean and how a near tragedy now helps her navigate the tumultuous waters of adulthood.
The Vision
As the writer and director, my vision for the film was to create a visceral and visually impactful experience that immerses the audience in the sights, sounds, and emotions of the protagonist at the beach. This environment serves as a metaphor for life's challenges and triumphs. The ocean becomes a powerful symbol, embodying both the beauty and unpredictability of existence, the importance of guidance, and the love of the people we encounter throughout life.

Color as a Time Capsule
The film happens through a series of non-chronological vignettes. Some occur in the present and others in the past, resembling a memory. Most of the storyline occurs inside the character's memory of a life-changing event. The film style and colors of each vignette will differentiate the timeline.
Present
Handheld camerawork will give the film an intimate and raw feel during present vignettes. Include close-ups to capture the Woman's emotions and idiosyncrasies, and use long/wide shots to showcase the beach's vastness and solitude.
Memory
The dreamscape is architecturally framed, resembling scenes from memory with gaps filled by the mind. A central focus is maintained through meticulous composition as a way to make sense of the main events.
As part of the production process, I created templates for the Schedules, Call Sheets, and Shot List to collaborate alongside the Producer, Director of Photography, and Assistant Director.
